Got an Older Home? Your Furnace is Probably Ready to be Replaced.
Above All Heating And Air Conditioning / January 13, 2016 / Furnace Repair
If your home is more than 20 years old, chances are that your furnace is getting close to the end of its life although some units have been known to reach 40 years of service. Conversely, some brands are notorious for failing early on a regular basis.
Still, 20 years is a good run and if you’ve reached that milestone you might want to consider a newer, more efficient unit — or at least have yours inspected by a reliable furnace repair company.
How old is your furnace?
There are a few ways to determine the age of your furnace:
• If you are the original homeowner, your furnace will be approximately the same age as the house
• If you are not the original owner, you might ask your neighbors what brand and model furnace they have and if they’ve ever replaced it
• The most reliable method is to look for the data plate mounted on the furnace itself. The plate may have the manufacturing date, or, you can contact the manufacturer with the model number; they may be able to tell you when your furnace was made.
What could go wrong — besides not working?
PLENTY! Your furnace might run constantly and shock you with sky-high utility bills. Some manufacturers try different materials in their products to boost efficiency or reduce material costs. Sometimes the materials work well, sometimes not so much and result in premature failure.
And if you have a gas furnace, a natural gas or carbon monoxide leak could create a potentially fatal health hazard. Let’s face it, parts wear out, leak, corrode or break down over many years, even decades, of faithful service.
These last two potential hazards don’t apply to electric furnaces, but they have their own troubles and will eventually fail or become increasingly expensive to operate.
Whether you have a gas or electric unit, heater repair is eventually going to be in your future.
